LIFE AFTER UNI
Career Update
By Viktoria Dekany, Interior Architect
The three-year at university is over, I graduated with a First Class Honoured Degree (81%) from one of the best university in the United Kingdom! I think I don’t have to tell how happy I am. I tried to put as much effort as I could into these years, and I feel it was absolutely worth the time and energy.
The reason why I feel this way is because I have been offered two jobs in the past few months, and I accepted straight away the first one - which came up in May (I haven’t even graduated in that time!). The other job offer was from a top architecture company in Manchester, where the manager called itself and he wanted me to work in the company’s visualisation team. I would have said yes if I didn’t accept the Spanish job earlier. My favorite part of the design process is the visualisation and presentation so it could have been a great opportunity, but right now I want to live my dreams!
I think I talked about my passion for living in Spain in my previous posts… and there we are, I got the opportunity!
From 2017 September, I am going to be a Design Teacher in a private university in Granada, South-Spain. The overall job includes the teaching of different aspects of Design to Spanish students at ESADA, a design university which offers the four specialties of design: Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design and Fashion Design.
I will be teaching different subjects, such as:
Visual Language (in Graphic Design)
Drawing and sketching (in Interior Design and Product Design)
Technical English (in Interior and Product Design)
Expressive Techniques (in Interior Design)
My main responsibilities include the teaching of sketching & drawing, professional presentation making in English language and computer visualisation skills for Spanish students. I am really excited about this job, as I never thought about being an actual teacher. However, I think I have all skills to be a good and reliable mentor for the students, especially that I am almost in their age.
I am expecting to improve my personal as well as professional skills, such as my artistic skills and drawing abilities through the demonstrations of this intense programme, the development of my organisation skills such as to prioritise, plan, manage time effectively, to work in a team enthusiastically and deliver stated aims and vision, or the ability to manage conflict and to build and maintain effective relationships with staff and pupils. I also expect high development in my computer knowledge through a strong sense of professionalism, commitment to upholding standards and setting an appropriate example to pupils. And lastly, the improvement of reading, writing, and speaking skills with the ability to talk, demonstrate and explain.
I would like to monitor my personal as well as my professional development over the next year, therefore I am going to write about the journey of this teaching job and hopefully achieve my outcome goal successfully. The programme should enable the development of my skills as an instructor, as well as an achievement in student engagement, success, retention, and completion. The monitoring process is largely based on systematised self-assessment and is centred on personal and professional areas. The qualitative aspects of the training will be measured in terms of student and staff perception and level of satisfaction with my teaching. In addition, I am not required to have a language competence in Spanish language but I would like to improve it for an A1/A2 level at the end of the programme.

The job offers a nine-month permanent contract, and besides the teaching I will work as an interior architect in a freelance basis. I would like to work on commercial and hospitality projects but mainly on workspace design projects.
I am not quite sure how my future will evolve after 2018 summer but I don’t rule out the opportunity of moving back to the UK. I think my resume is going to be quite nice with the compilation of a teaching job straight after graduation and with the participation in different design projects.
