DEGREE SHOW & POSTERS
Design Ideas
A short design project where we required to come up with design ideas of the space organisation of our Degree Event.
GROUP TASK
APRIL 1, 2017
The university's Degree Show event is one of the best time in each academic year. During the time of our final major project, we had to start thinking of our show and plan the disposable space. We made a group of three - me and my two best friend at the class. Each of us were working on individual ideas of the OSB board's design, and after a meeting, we decided to continue working only on the best ideas. All of us built the final model in SketchUp and I was responsible for making the final visualisation. I did a real quick representation of our idea by exporting *jpgs in different styles of the model and then I extended it in PhotoShop.

First idea of space arrangement (V. Dekany, 2017)
INDIVIDUAL SPACE DESIGN
STARTING...MAY 23, 2017
In the previous weeks, we had several meetings to see other design ideas of the display arrangement in the show. At the end, we decided to choose a rectangular form where three students can display their work, which enable the opportunity to everyone being individual with our own space.

Final idea of space arrangement (V. Dekany, 2017)
First, I started with a quick experiment in SketchUp. I build the base of the model and added my ideas, such as the profile display (name & bio) on the additional end panel of my bay.
Then, I added the papers, on the two sides 2 x A3 vertical papers, and an A1 paper in the focus. As my project is about nature integrated design, I thought I will take some greenery to my boards.
Individual space development (V. Dekany, 2017)
After I build the model, I made some sketches to figure out what paper sizes and layouts I should use to display my work. Besides the paper layouts, I was also considering having two shelves on the two side bays - one to display my NMP (Research into Biophilia & Co-workspaces) booklet, my 2nd year portfolio, and my business cards. The other shelf would display my first model of the building and the triangle object in the centre would display my second detailed model of the proposed design's 'Welcome Board'.
FIRST IDEA OF SPACE ARRANGEMENT
The first panel (2.1m x 500mm) of my space will only display my 'Profile' which will be printed on an A4 mounted foam board.
1. PROBLEM & LOCATION
As I want to show the design journey of the past three months, I will start with defining the 'Problem & Issue' on the second (2.1m x 500mm) bay, using my previously produced infographics, and moving towards to the 'Location' of my chosen building and site. This is going to be a half side of an A1 vertical paper (297mm x 841mm).
2. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & DESIGN PROPOSAL
Then, I believe it's important to show some hand-drawed sketches of my design development which will be displayed at the top of the main bay (2.1 m x 1000mm). I would like to display this in a diagrammatical and chronological way and finishing with the final floor & ceiling plans. This is going to be on a half side of an A2 horizontal paper (210mm x 594mm).

* Shelves are not included at this stage
As one of my main focus is on the west wide section of the building which shows the zoning and furniture specification, I also take this into the centre of my space. Considering that I also would like to display the elevations and explanation of the functional spaces, I will use an A1 vertical paper, just below the design development section.
3. VISUALS OF DESIGN PROPOSAL
The other half bay of my space will show the final design proposal's four best visuals: such as the exterior view, the ground floor's open/collaborative working area, the first floor's individual group studio, and the restoration space. This is going to be on a half side of an A1 vertical paper, like in the second bay.
DEVELOPING THE IDEA...MAY 25, 2017
After this provisional display method, I started to design my posters to see how they fit into the chosen layouts, so I am able to make any changes in time.

DEVELOPING THE IDEA...MAY 28, 2017
When I started inserting my design elements into the chosen layouts, I wasn't happy with the results. In some reason, the arrangement just didn't seem complete. I decided to go back sketching and improving on my ideas. Below are the developments:
(sketches are coming soon)
I spent a few hours to check other degree show's posters and it gave me a good inspiration to develop my own design. I decided to stick with six horizontal A3 papers in the centre of my space, as this arrangement gives a better opportunity to display my work. It also gives me a better chance to build up logically my design journey instead of having everything in one big poster. During I was sketching, I wanted to see the new changes in SketchUp too:
