HOW I MADE IT
Manchester Piccadilly Gardens - Visualisation Process
In my dissertation, I have chosen a full design refurbishment of Manchester's most visited area - Piccadilly Gardens, which is also a transport hub. The project intended to develop the city's successfulness by creating a playful, creative, fun but also relaxed and calm atmosphere in the buzzing city centre.
Project Summary
Project Name:
Piccadilly Gardens Refurbishment into a Biophilic Community Garden
Project Area: 50.000m2
Project Location: Manchester, UK
The design is based on the hypothesis of Biophilia which required the integration of numerous greenery, a new roof garden, a fountain and a canal. The site also offers many restoration area with a number of seating possibilities.
Through the development of the new healing garden facility, I ensured to improve human health and thus the planet, as well as to provide a more efficient, functional, sustainable, and cost effective design to both residents and tourists. In addition, the development should offer raising educational aspiration and a reduction in crime across the city centre. Finally, the new design focuses not only on function but on the aesthetic and identity factors which communicates the values of Manchester.
Visualisation: SketchUp & PhotoShop
1. Particular Area Layout - Fountain
Step 1
Working in SketchUp
First, I builded the 3D model in SketchUp. Obviously, I didn't put all the details into the software as I knew I was continuing the visualisation in PhotoShop. I started the process with exporting different styles of the scene, such as Lineweights and Shadows.

Step 2
Working in PhotoShop
I cropped the image, as I wanted to use this image to the final booklet. Then, I added the particular material, such as fountain, trees and plants.

Step 3 - Final Layout
Working in PhotoShop
When I was happy with the proposed image, I started to write the informations about this particular area of the site and inserting the final touches to the layout such as page divider and shadows.

I inserted people and hided the floor.
Step 3
Working in PhotoShop
I exported different views from SketchUp and started to work with them in Photoshop. I inserted trees, plants and materials to make the image more realistic.

Step 4 - Final Layout
Working in PhotoShop
After finishing the materials and other elements, I finalised the image with inserting a 'sunray' and the page layout with a quation which was relevant to my project.

3. Concept Development Layout
Step 1
Working in PhotoShop
In this layout, I wanted to represent the key elements of the new site structure as well as the proposed materials. As a previous page showed the full design plan, I only showed one particular area of the site. First, I exported one of my sketch to PhotoShop and started to fill with colours.

Step 2
Working in PhotoShop
Then, I started to experiment with inserting the proposed design materials, such as wood and different plants. In the colour scheme I wanted to display the chosen naturalistic shades such as warm brown and green.

Step 3
Working in PhotoShop
After I inserted all material types, I started to experiment with the layout and colour contrast.

Step 4
Working in PhotoShop
I changed the text layout and started to add more details to the site structure to display a more understandable view of the key elements.

Step 5 - Final Layout
Working in PhotoShop
In the final layout, I highlighted the main structure of the site and changed the contrast of the overall look. I spent almost the longest time on this page editing, probably 20 hours.
